Alt Rock Radio March Madness -- CFEX v. WWCD

In the Midwest Divisionals # 5 seed CFEX of Calgary, Alberta meets #12 seed WWCD of Columbus Ohio. Just a reminder -- the seeds are based on cume (how many people hear the station in a given period) in the Top 50 markets, in smaller markets it's based upon a guesstimate based upon size of market and ratings share. The low seed for WWCD is not based upon quality of the programming, but upon the relatively low rating and middling sized market. CFEX's main claim to fame is their "no Nickelback" policy. Should be an interesting bout. CFEX will be on the left, WWCD is on the right.

CFEX leads off with NEIGHBORHOOD #3 BY ARCADE FIRE. WWCD counters with SEVEN NATION ARMY BY THE WHITE STRIPES. Wow. This is tough. Seven Nation Army is awesome but it's also a tad overplayed. I'll give this round to CFEX

NO SLEEP TILL BROOKLYN -- BEASTIE BOYS VS. BACK AGAINST THE WALL -- CAGE THE ELEPHANT Very close call here, but I have to give up to the Beasties 2-0 CFEX
SMOOTH CRIMINAL -- ALIEN ANT FARM VS. NEXT TO ME -- CIVIL TWILIGHT The problem with novelty covers is that the novelty wears off. CD101 wins this round.
THE STAND -- MOTHER MOTHER VS. NEVER THERE -- CAKE Cake has stood the test of time. It's a tie game.
DOWN WITH THE SICKNESS -- DISTURBED VS. TIME TO PRETEND -- MGMT CD-101 leads 3-2
SCREAMING BLOODY MURDER -- SUM 41 VS. GOLD, GUNS, GIRLS -- METRIC How did that bratty Canadian punk band get so pretentious and overbearing?
UPRISING -- MUSE VS. GIVIN UP THE GUN --VAMPIRE WEEKEND This is turning into a rout 5-2 WWCD.
RED-- TREBLE CHARGER VS. PUMPED UP KICKS -- FOSTER THE PEOPLE Always love the Treblecharger track, but it was re-recorded for their debut album. Prefer the original. Nevertheless give CFEX a thumbs up for that soang.
MY BODY -- YOUNG THE GIANT VS. DANI CALIFORNIA -- CHILI PEPPERS They're both awesome.
Draw.
WHAT I GOT -- SUBLIME VS. BULLET -- STEEL TRAIN. SUBLIME = OVERPLAYED AND OVERPRAISED. WWCD WINS!!!!

NEXT: KXRK VS. CJLX. SHOULD BE AN INCREDIBLE MATCHUP

ARR March Madness -- WSUN vs. KNXA

#5 Seed WSUN of Jacksonville faces off against #12 seed KXNA of Fayetteville AK in he South Regional. Best of 10, songs off the playlist played about the same time. I listened to KNXA

WSUN leads off with My Body -- Young the Giant. KXNA counters with The Cave -- Mumford and Sons Both strong songs. It's a draw.

WSUN on the left and KXNA on the right.

SEND THE PAIN BELOW -- CHEVELLE VS. BY THE WAY -- CHILI PEPPERS. Mild Chili Peppers. Chevelle runs all over KXNA.
NEW DIVIDE -- LIMIN PARK VS. MANY OF HORRORS BIFFY CLYRO KSUN again
OTHERSIDE -- RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS VS. WISH YOU WERE HERE -- INCUBUS KSUN now ahead 3-0
LAY ME DOWN -- DIRTY HEADS VS. THE DISTANCE -- CAKE Hard to vote against Cake. MMMM. KSUN ahead 3-1
LOSER -- BECK VS. MAN IN THE BOX -- ALICE IN CHAINS. Keep him in hte box! WSUN 4-1
THE CAVE -- MUMFORD & SONS VS. STEADY AS SHE GOES -- THE RACONTEURS Anything Jack White is in involved with gets my vote. 5-1 edge. Time to call it for WSUN.

ARR March Madness -- KPNT vs. WPBZ

Well someone has to win this one. All you have to know about #5 seed KPNT of St. Louis is that they just did a similar March Madness promotion using bands and Avenged Sevenfold won. #12 seed WBZT is a CBS owned station out of West Palm Beach. It also leans active. Best of 10 in this first round matchup in the East Regional.

To lead off-- IT'S A TIE -- BOTH STATIONS PLAYED HELP IS ON THE WAY!

KPNT follows with PRISON SEX -- TOOL WPBZ follows with LITTLE LION MAN -- MUMFORD & SONS Dilemna. "Little Lion Man" managed, by the stategic implementation of potty mouth to bring banjos to Alternative rock radio. KPNT did bring out an early Tool track that wasn't named "Sober". I'll give this one to "The Point".

The rest: KPNT on the left

AWAKE AND ALIVE -- SKILLET VS. GIVEN UP - LINKIN PARK Never heard the Skillet track before so I checked out the video. Hmm violinist in the band, two female members including drummer, who shares the vocals -- interesting sorta like Evanescence meets Fairport Convention. "Given Up" is perhaps Likin Park's worst track KPNT wins again
LIVING IN A DREAM -- FINGER 11 VS. COME AS YOU ARE -- NIRVANA The Buzz gets on the board!
THE BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE -- MARILYN MANSON VS. RIPTIDE -- SI-- STOP! Use of Marilyn Manson --- KPNT disqualified!

Alt Rock Radio March Madness KNRK vs. KRAB

This should be short and messy. In the West Regional #6 seed KNRK in Portland, Oregon meets #11 seed KRAB of Bakersfield. This is the station that was runner up in my 2009 contest to see which was the worst Clear Channel alt rock station. Best of 10, but who expects that?

KNRK leads off with IF YOU LEAVE by ORCHESTRAL MANOEUVRES IN THE DARK KRAB counters with ALL OVER YOU BY LIVE The battle of recurrents. The one I'm more likely to sing along with is the OMD song.

WNRK on the left, KRAB on the right.

BAND ON THE RUN -- FOO FIGHTERS VS. ROPE -- FOO FIGHTERS Really? KNRK is going with a cover of a Wings song? With all the great FF songs to work with?
JUMP JIVE AND WAIL -- BRIAN SETZER ORCHESTRA VS. WISH YOU WERE HERE-- INCUBUS Fortunately American recovered from the great bad swing bend epidemic.
THE FUNERAL -- BAND OF HORSES VS. SHAKE ME DOWN -- CAGE THE ELEPHANT KNRK evens the score at 2-2.
DA DA DA -- TRIO VS. SING -- MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE Some one hit wonders are better left forgotten. KRAB takes a shocking 3-2 lead.
HOWLIN FOR YOU -- BLACK KEYS VS. NUMB -- LINKIN PARK Once again the boys from the Rubber City to the rescue. Tied again.
LOSER -- BECK vs. LAY ME DOWN -- DIRTY HEADS Fighting the forces of evil in a Bozo nightmare KNRK takes a 4-3 lead.
SAD SONG -- THE CARS VS. LITHIUM -- NIRVANA The new Cars song (as against the New Cars song) is fairly awesome, bu this is Nirvana we're tlaking about. The score is tied again!
VIVA LA VIDA -- COLDPLAY VS. ANIMAL -- NEON TREES Both songs are tuneful and popular, but the Coldplay song has more substance. 5-4 KNRK
OLD MAN -- REDLIGHT KING vs. SHE HATES ME -- PUDDLE OF MUDD HMM hip hop song with a generous sampling of Neil Young -- interesting. Hey don't step there, I don't think that's mud!

KNRK wins, but it was much harder than it should have been.

2011 March Madness -- WKRK v. KMYZ

Back to the Midwest Regionals where # 6 seed WKRK, a jockless CBS owned station out of Cleveland (fairly successful in the ratings by the way)meets #11 seed KMYZ out of Tulsa. Best of ten, I judge because it's my blog. 10 songs off their actual playlist played at about the same time. Let's see how they did

KRK on the left MYZ on the right

UPRISING -- MUSE VS. SO COLD -- BREAKING BENJAMIN WKRK wins the first round.
AROUND THE WORLD -- CHILI PEPPERS VS. SHAKE ME DOWN -- CAGE THE ELEPHANT 2-0 WKRK.
MY BODY -- YOUNG THE GIANT VS. MUZZLE -- SMASHING PUMPKINS Billy Corgan jumped the shark long ago. WKRK amasses a 3-0 lead.
CANNONBALL -- THE BREEDERS VS. WAITING FOR THE END -- LINKIN PARK Any station that plays the Breeders, I'll listen to. Sweep?
LIKE A STONE -- AUDIOSLAVE VS. SMELLS LIKE TEEN SPIRIT -- NIRVANA Nope.
AIN'T NO REST FOR THE WICKED -- CAGE THE ELEPHANT VS. ENTER SANDMAN -- METALLICA Metallica rules. KRK 4-2
PRYO -- KINGS OF LEON VS. RIPTIDE -- SICK PUPPIES No contest. KRK is poised for the win.
WAITING FOR THE END -- LINKIN PARK VS. TIGHTEN UP -- BLACK KEYS. Not yet. Not if the dynamic duo from Akron have anything to say about it.
RUNAWAY TRAIN -- SOUL ASYLUM VS. HELP IS ON THE WAY -- RISE AGAINST Quite the underrated band, Soul Asylum. Unfairly slagged song, was it the attention paid by contemporary hit radio or the milk cartion video?

Huh? Oh sorry. WKRK wins. Next KNRK vs. KRAB

Alt Radio March Madness KRBZ vs. KUCD

The South Regional goes west -- # 6 seed KRBZ is a highly regarded indie out of San Diego. #11 seed KUCD is a pop leaning alternative (how many of those are there?) owned by Clear Channel out of Honolulu.

As always best of 10. KBZT on the left KUCD on the right. Should be interesting.

KBZT all about the music reaches back to the 80's and comes up with BEDS ARE BURNING -- MIDNIGHT OIL KUCD apparently taken aback can only muster APOLOGIZE -- ONE REPUBLIC KBZT takes the first heat.

BULLS ON PARADE -- RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE VS. TIGHTEN UP -- BLACK KEYS Love the Black Keys, but you gotta give it up for "Rally round the family, with a pcoket full of shells" and Tom Morello's a monster on the wah wah pedal.
SWEET DISPOSITION -- THE TEMPER TRAP VS. ALL THE SMALL THINGS -- BLINK 182 3-0 KBZT!
LOUDER THAN EVER -- COLD WAR KIDS VS. WAITING FOR THE END -- LINKIN PARK Let's face it. The new Cold War Kids song just isn't very good.
BLACK HOLE SUN -- SOUNDGARDEN VS. SHATTERED (TURN THE CAR AROUND) -- O.A.R. 4-1 KBZT It's theirs to lose.
PHOTOGRAPH -- WEEZER VS. SEVEN NATION ARMY -- WHITE STRIPES KUCD, knowing it's now or never pull out their trump card and stays in the game 4-2 now
LASSO -- PHOENIX VS. HELP IS ON THE WAY -- RISE AGAINST Do you get the feeling that KUCD is trying too hard to be all things to everybody? One more wins it for KBZT.
AEROPLANE -- RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS VS. BADFISH -- SUBLIME. One of the weaker Chili Peppers songs against an average Sublime. Draw.
THIS IS RADIO CLASH -- THE CLASH VS. MOVE ALONG -- ALL AMERICAN REJECTS Closer call than you might think, but it's still the Clash. London calling it for KBZT.

Alt Rock Radio March Madness -- WEND v. WRXL

2 years ago I did a similar competition going the other way, trying to see which was the worst Clear Channel alternative station (Take a bow, Dayton's WXEG!. This is a bit of deja vu with two Clear Channel pseudo alt stations, but this time trying to suck less. WEND of Charlotte is the Number 6 Seed in the East and WRXL of Richmond is the Number 11 seed. All I have to say is thank goodness I'm not acutally listening to these sets.

WEND starts off with "I WILL NOT BOW -- BREAKING BENJAMIN WHILE WRXL counters with CREEP -- RADIOHEAD. Not much of a battle here. RXL wins the heat hands down.

WEND left side -- WRXL right side

OUTSIDE BY AARON LEWIS W/ FRED DURST VS. DIAMOND EYES -- SHINEDOWN Country singer covering Staind. Interesting. Shinedown? Not so much. Tie score.
HELP IS ON THE WAY -- RISE AGAINST VS. YOU'RE GONNA GO FAR KID -- OFFSPRING Both songs are a bit too ambitious for their own good. Gotta give the edge to Offspring though. RXL retakes the lead.
BYOB -- SYSTEM OF A DOWN VS. THE GOOD LIFE -- 3 DAYS GRACE. BYOB was the soundtrack for the disaffected soldiers of Bush's war. The Good Life was radio fodder for frat parties. Tied again.
WAITING FOR THE END -- LINKIN PARD VS. NEVER THERE -- CAKE Piece of cake. RXL 3-2.
YOU'RE GOING DOWN -- SICK PUPPIES vs. PORN STAR DANCING -- MY DARKEST DAYS Any song worse than Porn Star Dancing in 2010? Anyone? 3-3 tie
GLORIFIED G -- PEARL JAM VS. SANTA MONICA -- EVERCLEAR Hard to pick one, but I'll give the edge to Everclear for the lyrics 4-3 RXL
THROUGH GLASS -- STONE SOUR VS. SAY YOU'LL HAUNT ME -- STONE SOUR. "Through Glass" is their best song, hands down so it's tied again 4-4.
SO FAR AWAY -- AVENGED SEVENFOLD VS. HEMMORHAGE (IN MY HANDS)-- FUEL. I'll have to go with the b-list grunge. RXL
JUST LIKE YOU -- 3 DAYS GRACE VS. JARS -- CHEVELLE Awful vs. Awesome. WRXL Wins!

Alt Rock Radio March Madness KKDO vs. KXTE

Today it's the West Regional with #7 Seed KKDO of Sacramento vs. #10 seed KXTE Extreme radio out of Las Vegas. KKDO is fairly new, but should have no trouble dispatching KKDO, which leans active rock (or did last time I checked --lotta format tweaking going on out there lately. Best of ten songs chosen from their actual playlists at about the same time.

KKDO leads of cautiously with SHOW ME WHAT I'M LOOKING FOR -- CAROLINA LIAR. KXTE comes out like gangbustgers with RENEGADES OF FUNK -- RAGE AGANST THE MACHINE and swing into an early lead.

From here on out KKDO is on the left ad KXTE is on the right.

WILD HORSES -- SUNDAYS VS. MACHINE GUN BLUES -- SOCIAL DISTORTION Wild horses couldn't drag me away from favoring Social Distortion over The Sunday's sodden cover of the Stones.
HOWLIN FOR YOU -- THE BLACK KEYS VS. I WANNA BE SEDATED -- THE RAMONES. C'mon. It's the Ramones. Even the members of the Black Keys would tell you to vote for them. It's a 3-0 KXTE lead.
EVEN FLOW -- PEARL JAM VS. LAZY EYE -- SILVERSUN PICKUPS. KXTE keeps putting up those beautiful layups, but KKDO hits a desperation 3 pointer.
INSIDE OUT -- EVE 6 VS. NEW LOW-- MIDDLE CLASS RUT. EVE 6? Talk about a New Low. 4-1 KXTE
LETTERS FROM TEH SKY -- CIVIL TWILIGHT VS. SANTA MONICA -- EVERCLEAR Nothing against Everclear, love them but the Civil Twilight track is one of my faves of last year. KXTE still retains a 4-2 lead.
LULLABY -- THE CURE VS. HWOLIN FOR YOU -- THE BLACK KEYS Can't vote agaisnt the Balck Keys twice. Interesting deep cut pick from KKDO though. Best KKDO can hope for is a tie now.
WHIRRING -- THE JOY FORMIDABLE VS. AUDIENCE OF ONE -- RISE AGAINST. WHIRRING is a fascinating new track, so I'll give it an edge here. 5-3 KXTE
GLYCERINE -- BUSH VS. FAR BEHIND -- CANDLEBOX The battle of the B-list grungers. KXTE gets the win and goes onto Round 2! I gotta admit that they did it with a pretty good taste.

Alt radio March Madness WLUM vs. CILV

Another brutal matchup, with one fairly decent alt station leaving the competition. The number seven seeding is WLUM of Milwaukee against Ottawa's best kept secret CILV, which I predict will give WLUM a run for its money. Best of 10 -- I get to judge since it's my blog.

WLUM leads off with Somebody Told Me by the Killers. However, the lame lyrics fall to the lyrical might that is Forced to Love -- Broken Social Scene CILV wins the first round. WLUM is on the left, CILV on the right.

WHAT'S MY AGE AGAIN -- BLINK 182 VS. WHY I AM -- DAVE MATTHEWS BAND Jambalya beats corn dogs anyday. CILV opens up a 2-0 edge
PUMPED UP KICKS -- VS. I HEAR YOU CALLING -- GOB However pop punk beats sodden synth pop every time 3-0 CILV. This could be a rout.
TAKE 'EM DOWN -- DROPKICK MURPHYS VS. LOOKING FOR A PLACE TO HAPPEN -- TRAGICALLY HIP I'll call this a draw based upon the fact that I haven't heard either song and I don't have time to check them out.
JEREMY -- PEARL JAM VS. DO YOU WANT TO -- FRANZ FERDINAND Another draw.
THE GHOST INSIDE -- BROKEN BELLS VS. WHEN THE NIGHT FEELS MY SONG -- BEDOUIN SOUNDCLASH Always had a soft spot in my heart for Bedoin Soundclash's first single 4-0 CILV, and the best WLUM can hope for is overtime.
USE SOMEBODY -- KINGS OF LEON VS. WELCOME -- HEY ROSETTA! WLUM plays its trump card -- Kings of Leon -- and finally gets on the board.
SO WHATCHA WANT -- BEASTIE BOYS VS. HIGH AND DRY -- RADIOHEAD. Damn I like both these songs. But I like So Whatcha Want a hair more.
ANIMAL -- NEON TREES VS. DOG DAYS ARE OVER -- NEON TREES. The horses are coming and Live eighty eight five is riding one of them, so run for your mother...

Next is brand spanking new Sacramento station KKDO vs. KXTE of Las Vegas.

Alt Rock Radio March Madness KROX vs. KVGS

Next matchup is Austin's KROX vs. KVGS out of Las Vegas. KROX leans slightly indie and KVGS slightly leans classic alternative, but not too classic. In the 2 hours I looked at not one song was released prior to 1991. Best of 10, winner goes to the next round.

KROX leads off with PANIC SWITCH BY THE SILVERSUN PICKUPS and KVGS goes with LITHIUM BY NIRVANA. That'll be the order they go from here on out. KVGS wins the first heat.

HELP IS ON THE WAY -- RISE AGSINT VS. WHEN YOU WERE YOUNG -- THE KILLERS KVGS 2-0
CARESSS ME DOWN -- SUBLIME VS. NOT IN LOVE -- CRYSTAL CASTLES. With secret weapon Robert Smith. KVGS has built up a formidable 3-0 lead.
TIGHTEN UP -- THE BLACK KEYS VS. SEX AND CANDY -- MARCY PLAYGROUND. KROX finally gets on the board.
BLACK HOLE SUN -- SOUNDGARDEN VS. THE PRETENDER -- FOO FIGHTHERS Draw.
THIS IS WHY WE FIGHT -- THE DECEMBRISTS VS. SHAKE ME DOWN -- CAGE THE ELEPHANT KROX narrows it to 3-2.
1901 -- PHOENIX VS. SOUL MEETS BODY -- DEATH CAB FOR CUTIE. Love them both. Can't choose.
ALL MY LIFE -- FOO FIGHTERS VS. I WANT YOU TO -- WEEZER As much as I love the Foos, the Weezer song is the one I sing along to. 4-2 KVGS.
MY BODY-- YOUNG THE GIANT VS. VASOLINE -- STONE TEMPLE PILOTS Can KROX tie it up to go to overtime?
WICKED GARDEN -- STONE TEMPLE PILOTS VS. AMBER --311. No they can't. Couldn't have picked a worse time to pull out the STP.

Next -- WLUM takes on Ottawa's CILV in the Midwest Regional

Alt radio March Madness WRZX vs. WMRQ

IN the east regional WRZX the Clear Channel alt station in Indianoplis #7 seed takes on #10 seed WMRQ of the Waterbury area (which was owned by Clear Channel a few years back, Best of 10.

WRZX leads off with Country Song by Seether and WMRQ counters with Where It's At by Beck. Keep in mind I said I sorta kinda liked the Seether song. WMRQ takes the first round.

From here on out the song on the left was played by WRZX and the one on the right by WMRQ

ROOSTER-- ALICE IN CHAINS VS. WAITING FOR THE END -- LINKIN PARK One of the early Alice in Chains songs that wasn't about Heroin. I think. WRZX wins this round
SAIL -- AWOL NATION VS. HANGING BY A MOMENT -- LIFEHOUSE Meh. VCll it a draw.
CREEP -- STONE TEMPLE PILOTS VS. COME AS YOU ARE -- NIRVANA Real flannel beats fake every time WMRQ gets out to a 2-1 lead
ROPE -- FOO FIGHTERS VS. YOU FOUND ME -- THE FRAY WRZX ties it.
BASKET CASE -- GREEN DAY VS. RUNAWAY TRAIN -- SOUL ASYLUM I'll make the unpopular pick here and go with Soul Asylum MRQ Again.
WE USED TO WAIT -- ARCADE FIRE VS. LITTLE LION MAN -- Mumford & Sons. Arcade Fire? Sure this is a Clear Channel station? Tie again.
IN BLOOM -- NIRVANA VS. THE PRETENDER -- FOO FIGHTERS. WRZX wins another round.
NEW LOW -- MIDDLE CLASS RUT VS. LOW -- CRACKER. WRZX insures the win. Wow.

A surprisingly solid set by RZX. Next bout Austin's KROX vs. Vegas' KVGS in the South regional

It's official

KITS is the sole alt rocker in the Bay Area. KSJO is now a Chinese language pop station. Maybe this will boost Live 105's ratings out of the toilet, not that they've deserved it, with their microscopic playlist of thoroughly predictable songs.

Alt Rock March Madness: KCXX vs. KFMA

Time for the first game in the West Regional. KCXX from San Bernadino-Riverside Ca. vs. KFMA of Tuscon Ariz. Both lean active, so this one could get ugly. To recap 10 songs from their playlist played about the same time. I'm the sole arbiter (it's my blog after all) KCXX's songs will be on the left and KFMA's on the right.

KCXX leads off with Trun Around by Iration. Had to go to YouTube to listen to that one. KFMA goes with a safe pick Shake Me Down by Cage the Elephant. Not a big fan of fake reggae so KFMA wins the first round.

MILLION MILES AWAY -- Offspring (not the Plimsouls tune) vs. SANTERIA -- Sublime What did I just say about fake Reggae? Score one for KCXX.
WHY CAN'T I BE YOU -- THE CURE vs. COUNTRY SONG -- SEETHER. I love about half of Cure's output, but the other half is some of the most annoying music ever. This song qualifies as the latter. As to the Seether song -- gotta admit I sorta kinda like it. KFMA wins the round,
ROPE -- FOO FIGHTERS vs. THE ROYAL WE -- Silversun Pickups I don't mind the SPs aping the Smashing Pumpkins, but they should stay away from aping stuff like "Tonight Tonight". Or anything post Melon Collie for that matter. KCXX wins.
DIG -- INCUBUS vs. LOVE HURTS -- INCUBUS A light grenade battle! "Dig" is their best song, hands down. KCXX is out to a 3-2 lead.
MACHINEHEAD -- BUSH vs. LAND OF CONFUSION -- Disturbed. You really expect me to pick a favorite among this dreck? call this one a draw.
UNDISCLOSED DESIRES -- MUSE vs. IN THE END -- LINKIN PARK Sorry but plucked strings just don't belong in a rock song. Give this one to KFMA, which makes it a 3-3 tie.
BASKET CASE-- GREEN DAY vs. FACELESS -- RED KCXX wins this round in a walk.
HESITATE -- STONE SOUR VS. BELIEVE -- BRAVERY Wow. who would've thought that KFMA would pull out a Bravery track based upon what they've played so far? Tied once more. Next one's for the win.
TROUBLEMAKER -- WEEZER VS. MACHINE GUN BLUES -- SOCIAL DISTORTION Wow. This one's not easy -- but I've got to give the edge to KFMA!

Next: An Eastern Division matchup: WRZX vs. WMRQ

Alt Radio March Madness WXXJ v. WROX

Usually you can tell what kind of station you have by the number of xs. None or one X is usually OK. More than one X and I hope you like Mudvayne because it's probably on the playlist.

We have a double X station WXXJ of Jacksonville an eighth seed vs. WROX of Virginia Beach, a ninth seed. WROX is an interesting station cause you'll never know what they're going to play. They can go both hard and pop. WXXJ is a play it safe station that leans active. Best of 10, with me the sole arbiter, since its' my blog.

WXXJ leads off with CUMBERSOME -- SEVEN MARY THREE. WROX counters with an relatively obscure Paramore song PLAYING GOD. Cumbersome was always a guilty pleasure for me. Too bad they didn't have more songs that good in them. Advantage XXJ

WAITING FOR THE END -- Linkin Park vs. DRIVE -- Incubus Gotta go with Incubus. Tie Score
HOW YOU REMIND ME -- Nickelback vs. I WILL NOT BOW -- Breaking Benjamin. Don't believe I'm typing this -- Nickelback has the better song! WXXJ ahead 2-1
HAMMERHEAD -- Offspring vs. CLOSER TO THE EDGE -- 30 Seconds to Mars. Why is 30 Seconds to Mars like Kansas? They're both art bands without the art. WSSJ wins again.
FOREVER -- Papa Roach vs. WHEN YOU WERE YOUNG -- The Killers. Love that faux-Springsteen Edge to 96-x (WROX)
NEW LOW -- Middle Class Rut vs. RADIOACTIVE -- Kings of Leon Hard to vote against Kings of Leon but "New Low" is one of my current faves. WXXJ is out to a comfortable 4-2 lead.
YOU'RE GOING DOWN -- Sick Puppies vs. CRUSH -- Dave Matthews Band WROX narrows it to 4-3.
COLD -- Crossfade vs. PANIC SWITH -- Silversun Pickups. No contest. 96-x ties it up!
SHAKE ME DOWN -- Cage the Elephant vs. FORGET YOU -- Cee Lo Green and 96-x takes the lead! Can they wrap it up?
WISH YOU WERE HERE -- Incubus vs. WELCOME TO THE BLACK PARADE -- My Chemical Romance. Like em both -- tough choice. But the edge goes to -- Incubus. This means

OVERTIME!

Best of three starting at 100 pm today.

HELP IS ON THE WAY -- RISE AGAINST vs. NINE IN THE AFTERNOON -- Panic at the Disco Not an easy choice here. Neither song is bad, but they both have flaws -- very different flaws. The Rise Agaisnt song is rather disjointed, the Panic song is a bit goopy and contrived. Both have virtues -- good lyrics by Rise Agaisnt -- good melody by Panic at the Disco. OK I'm calling it for XXJ!
NEVER TOO LATE -- Three Days Grace vs. WAITING FOR THE END -- Linkin Park. 96x get the edge here. It's down to the final song --
SEX ON FIRE -- KINGS OF LEON vs. DONT TRUST ME -- 3 OH 3. 96x couldn't have picked a worse time to go teenybob.

WXXJ goes to the second round!

Alt rock radio March Madness -- KRBZ vs. KENZ

It's the no. 8 seed in the Midwest KRBZ of Kansas City vs. the #9 seed #2 alt station of Salt Lake City KENZ. 10 songs from their playlist head to head. Best of 10 moves on.

KRBZ opens with HOME -- Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros
KENZ counters with SWEET DISPOSITION -- Temper Trap
KENZ gets the win

BLISTER IN THE SUN -- Violent Femmes vs. BITTER SWEET SYMPHONY -- The Verve Are they ever going to stop playing that stupid Verve song? The Buzz ties it up
SOMEBODY TOLD ME -- The Killers vs. ANIMAL -- Neon Trees both are a bit dumb but irresistably poppy. Tie.
NEXT TO ME -- Civil Twilight vs. SHATTERED (Turn the Car Around) -- O.A.R. Nothing against OAR but it just doesn't compare to Civil Twilight 2-1 Buzz
DISARM -- Smashing Pumpkins VS. SAY IT AIN'T SO -- Weezer Not the most consistent band in the world, but when they're on they're almost unbeatable. KENZ ties it up
MONEYGRABBER -- Fitz & The Tantrums vs. TIGHTEN UP -- Black Keys Gotta admit it. Like "Tighten Up" but love "Moneygrabber" Buzz retakes the lead
STORY OF MY LIFE -- Social Distortion vs. WAKE ME UP WHEN SEPTEMBER ENDS -- Green Day. OK Green Day went Top 40 with this song. Maybe because it was good. KENZ Ties the score again.
THE GHOST INSIDE -- Broken Bells vs. DESIRE -- U2 KENZ sticks with the safe picks, but they're winners.
HELP IS ON THE WAY -- Rise Agaisnt vs. SHOW ME WHAT IM LOOKING FOR -- Carolina Liar Soemtimes songcraft carries the day over sheer passion.

It was a good match, but it's over KENZ wins.

Next: The South Regionals #8 WXXJ vs. #9 WROX

Alt Radio March Madness WFNX vs. WBRU

Wow. Two faves fighting it out in the opening round. Sometimes that's how the brackets fall. WFNX was an eighth seed based upon their miniscule ratings in a big city and WBRU a ninth seed on their respectible ratings in a medium market. Let's see how this East Divisional plays out

WFNX opens with FAKE PLASTIC TREES BY RADIOHEAD
WBRU counters with NO YOU GIRLS -- FRANZ FERDINAND
It's close but FNX has the edge.

WE USED TO WAIT -- Arcade Fire vs. CLOSER -- Anberlin FNX 2-0
WHEN YOU WERE YOUNG -- The Killers vs. SOMEWHERE ONLY WE KNOW -- Keane WBRU breaks through
CHANGING -- Airborne Toxic Event vs. PARDON ME -- Incubus FNX edges BRU again
HELP IM ALIVE -- Metric vs. YOUR SURRENDER -- Neon Trees This is getting out of hand. FNX again.
UNDER COVER OF DARKNESS -- The Strokes vs. MESS OF ME -- SWITCHFOOT Wow. Tie.
REBEL REBEL -- David Bowie vs. FLAGPOLE SITTA -- Harvey Danger There's worse Bowie songs out there. But there's also much better. Give it to BRU
PANIC SWITCH -- Silversun Pickups vs. SHAKE ME DOWN -- Cage the Elephant It's over. FNX wins decisively and moves on to Round 2. Next the 8-9 matchup in the Midwest. Regional

Alternative Radio March Madness CJLC vs. WCYY

To recap, for the opening round I pitted some of the coolest small market stations against others that don't quite have that rep. So far, however the bouts have been really competitive and one station in Reno took down KSLG, one of my faves. Today it's CJLC, a station out of Kingston Ont. against WCYY, the alternative station for Portland Maine. Ten songs that the stations actually played at about the same time -

CJLC wastes no time and goes with WE USED TO WAIT -- ARCADE FIRE. WCYY counters with HELP IS ON THE WAY -- RISE AGAINST Nothing against Rise Against, but CJLC wins the first round.

DRINKING IN LA -- BRAD VAN 3000 VS HESITATE -- STONE SOUR Wow. Just about forgot about that 90's one hit wonder. Just for remembering that song, CJLC gets the edge.
HIGH AND DRY -- RADIOHEAD VS. BLIND -- KORN If this was the moveies it would be Citizen Kane vs. Plan Nine From Outer Space
THE CAVE -- Mumford and Sons vs. DIAMOND EYES -- SHINEDOWN or It's A Wonderful Life vs. Heavens Gate
NEW MOON RISING -- WOLFMOTHER VS. IM SHIPPING UP TO BOSTON -- DROPKICK MURPHYS CJLC finally lets its guard down and WCYY finally gets on the board.
YOUR TIME HAS COME -- AUDIOSLAVE VS. CLOSER TO THE EDGE -- 30 SECONDS TO MARS WCYY has no hope winning this round by playing the Kansas of alternative rock.
THEM KIDS -- SAM ROBERTS VS. I WAS WRONG -- SOCIAL DISTORTION One of Sam Roberts' weaker tracks is no match for social distortion. Advantage WCYY
HATE TO SAY I TOLD YOU SO -- THE HIVES VS. THE ANIMAL -- DISTURBED.

We're done here -- and thank goodness WCYY had Seether ready to go for the next round. CJLC is the clear winner. It goes up against the mighty CFNY in the East Regional.

Wednesday, March 16, 2011

March Madness KSLG vs. KRZQ

Two more small market stations duke it out This time it's KSLG from Humboldt County California vs. KRZQ of Reno, Nevada. This is the play in for the West Regional.

KSLG goes first with HOW SOON IS NOW? -- THE SMITHS to which KRZQ counters with TRAIN IN VAIN -- THE CLASH KSLG gets the early lead

NEW DIVIDE -- LINKIN PARK vs. SELLING THE DRAMA -- LIVE KRZQ ties it up.
TELL ME BABY -- RHCP vs. SHAKE ME DOWN -- CAGE THE ELEPHANT Advantage KSLG
HOWLIN FOR YOU -- BLACK KEYS VS. LONGVIEW -- GREEN DAY 3-1 KSLG
KNIGHTS OF CYDONIA -- MUSE VS. PYRO -- KINGS OF LEON Ooooh Pulling out Muse instead of going for the kill. Is KSLG getting overconfident? KRZQ.
SAIL -- AWOL NATION VS. ANIMAL -- NEON TREES At least the Neon Trees tune is catchy. KRZQ ties it up again.
COUSINS -- VAMPIRE WEEKEND VS. OTHERSIDE -- CHILI PEPPERS KSLG retakes the lead.
THE WAY WE GET BY -- SPOON VS. NEED YOU TONIGHT -- INXS I'll call this a draw.
CAMERAS -- MATT & KIM VS. PANIC SWITCH -- SILVERSUN PICKUPS Gotta go with KRZQ on this one.
LET'S PUSH THINGS FORWARD -- THE STREETS VS. ROPE -- FOO FIGHTERS Cockney hip hop? I don't think so. KRZQ knocks off KSLG! Didn't see that one coming!

KRZQ next meets the formidable KROQ.

The last play in willbe CKLC of Kingston Ontario vs. WCCY of Portland Me.

Alternative Radio March Madness -- KRXF vs. WNNX

two stations -- ten songs each -- winner gets the #16 slot in the Midwest Divsionals

The stations KRXF -- a feisty little indie station from Bend Oregon
vs. Baton Rogue's WNXX/KNXX

KRXF gores first whipping out "Rock & Roll Radio" by the Ramones while WNXX counters with Self Esteem by Offspring -- Ouch they had to go with a Phil Spector produced track. I gotta five this one to WNXX.

Bullet the Blue Sky -- U2 vs. The Cave -- Mumford & Sons KRXF gets the edge this time.
There is No Other Way -- Blur vs. Photograph -- Nickelback In a very controversial call, the judges prefer the only decent song Nickelback wrote to Blur's weakest single WNXX wins!
Some Crappy Filter Song I Couldn't Bother to Find Out the Title to vs. My Body -- Young the Giant Advantage WNXX -- upset in the works?
Long Time -- Cake vs. Animal -- Neon Trees Haven't got into the new Cake single yet. Gotta give the edge to WNXX this time
Mr. Brightside -- The Killers vs. Add it Up -- Violent Femmes. Gotta give WNNX credit for playing a Violent Femmes song that isn't "Blister In the Sun"
Gotta Get Away -- Offspring vs. Louder Than Ever -- Cold War Kids. KRXF gets the edge here.
Idioteque -- Radiohead vs. Bulls on Parade -- Rage Against the Machine. Never thought I'd vote against a Rage song, but I got to give the win to the station that dares to pllay a Kid A track.
Walking On the Moon -- Police vs. Are You Gonna Be My Girl -- Jet Points for reaching back to an early Police track.
Redemption Song -- Bob Marley & The Wailers vs. Undercover of Darkness Ilove the new Strokes single but we're talking BOB MARLEY here.

Hey -- It looks like we got us a tie 5-5. That means OVERTIME! Best of 3!

KRXF lays down Will Do by TV on the Radio, April 29, 1992 -- Sublime and Wake Up by the Arcade Fire. KNNX is playing the Dr. Drew show -- that's almost enough to get them disqualified, but we'll go back to the last 3 songs they played before going syndicated. Stacy's Mom by Fountains of Wayne, Little Lion Man by Mumford and Sons and DOA by the Foo Fighters. Wow it's close but it's KRXF by a hair. They go onto meet Houston's Clear Channel horror KTBZ.

Alternative Radio March Madness!!! WIIS v. WARQ

So a new game to amuse me and anyone who happens to stumble upon this humble site.

68 alternative stations -- seeded by cume for the top markets and by ratings plus market size. 8 of them are pitted against each other in an opening round. Just like the NCAAs the stations are grouped into four regionals. I tried to keep the stations geographically similar. Each station gets a set of 10 songs randomly picked from their logs that the stations played more or less at the same time. The opening round is not quite a fair fight -- four scrappy small market indies against four fairly generic alt stations from small markets -- but you never know, upsets happen.

The first game pits WIIS, from Key West Florida, which just got its website up and running again after an absence of several years against WARQ of Columbia SC

WIIS -- Never is Enough -- Barenaked Ladies
WARQ -- What I've Done -- Linkin Park
Instead of going for the kill WIIS feints with a deep cut from an underrated band. Advantage WIIS

Ready to Start-- Arcade Fire vs. Rope -- Foo Fighters. Gotta call this one a draw.
The Reeling -- Passion Pit vs. Ride to California -- Paper Tongues A closer call than you may think, but WIIS wins again.
Clocks -- Coldplay vs. Lost in You -- Three Days Grace. WIIS again. No contest.
Hands -- The Ting Tings vs. The Red -- Chevelle. WARQ finnally gets on the board.
Old White Lincoln -- Gaslight Anthem vs. Simple Math -- Manchester Orchestra An excellent deep track against a brillant, beautiful new track OHHH I CANT CHOOSE.
Barricade -- Interpol vs. Even Flow -- Pearl Jam Hard not to pick Interpol, but even harder to vote against Pearl Jam. WARQ edge
Hang On -- Weezer vs. Diamond Eyes -- Shinedown RU kidding me? WIIS all the way.
Rhinestone Eyes -- Gorillaz vs. All Mixed Up -- 311 311's song is more memorable. WARQ wins. This is closer than I thought it would be.
Serve the Servants -- Nirvana vs. Shake Me Down -- Cage the Elephant You gotta give WIIS points for playing the more obscure and abrasive Nirvana songs. WIIS edges out WARQ and goes on to meet the #1 seed in the South

That would be KYSR -- LA's Clear Channel outlet in LA.

Next up: Bend, Oregon's KRXF vs. Baton Rouge's WNXX/KNXX for the # 16 seed in the Midwest regional (yeah, I know, that's a mighty big midwest)

The Essential 11 -- March 2011

Yes. I skipped February -- as is typical, the month is short and the pickings are slim. But things are picking up now--

1) Rope -- Foo Fighters Some really tricky time signatures here. I'm really hearing a Led Zep influence on this song without the Foos becoming a Soundgarden-like soundalike.
2) Undercover of Darkness -- The Strokes This one sounds like it could've come off their debut album, had they eschewed the heavily processed vocals. But even if the band felt out of sorts when they recorded it, as reported -- it doesn't show up here, and you wonder what they're capable of when the chemistry is working.
3) Lotus Flower -- Radiohead Sweet and deeply unsettling at the same time. The song skitters about like a cat looking to pounce on something -- anything.
4) Changing -- Airborne Toxic Event A relatively straightforward pop song for them, and a pretty good one at that.
5) This Is Why We Fight -- The Decembrists The most folkrocky song off their new album, it's threatening to become the anthem of the decade.
6) Take Me Out -- Atomic Tom I came a bit late to this song through their rather awesome video, in which they rock their I pads convincingly in a New York subway. Like "My Body" this is a BIG song.
7) The Roller -- Beady Eye I listened to it and liked it and thought immediately that it reminded me of Oasis back when. Then I learned they WERE Oasis minus Noel.
8) OMFG -- Deluka Can't get enough of those female led rock bands.
9) Windows Are Rolled Down -- Amos Lee My new favorite folkie almost rocks out on this one. Off of the excellent Mission Bell album.
10) The Stand -- Mother Mother I'll probably toss this in the pile of novelty songs that got old quick with "That's Not My Name" and "If I Had a Million Dollars" in a year or so, but for now this one tickles me just fine.
11) Will Do -- TV on the Radio They've reacted to the unexpected airplay on AAA by going softer, if no less odd on this track, but this band always rewards richly on repeated listens.

All in all, alternative and AAA stations no longer have an excuse to play Shinedown or Colbie Callait respectively. Even if they're owned by Clear Cahnnel.

Next to correct for distortions due to size of playlists.
